Went out last night to target flatheads. After missing a good run on a live hybrid bass,I turned him into cutbait and ended up catching this blue instead. Very Happy Scale wouldnt turn on,so I dont know what it weighed.Sure was fun, this fish put up one heck of a fight. Laughing Back after the flatheads again tommorow night. Cool

As far as I know its legal to use any fish that you want as long as you catch it on a hook and not in a net or trap...Thats the way the law has been interpreted to me many times anyways...

i have always been told, and pretty sure read in that the use of any game fish for bait is strictly prohibited, and also pretty sure that if you catch a record on a game fish it will not be counted....... ill look and see if i can find that somewhere, but ive heard this for years also

Here in Indiana it is legal to use any fish for bait caught by legal means.I caught the bass on a jig.If I get them in the cast net I let them go. Very Happy Carp and shad may not be used as lve bait except for brookville lake, where live shad may be used. Rolling Eyes

The type of bait that you are allowed to use varies from state to state. Always check the regulations for the state that you are fishing in. Don't take advice from someone from another state about what is legal or not. Here in Ohio we can use any game fish for bait as long as it is of legal size and taken by legal means.

I looked up KY laws on this subject and here is what I found.

Regardless of size or how obtained, it is illegal to use any sport fish (except redear sunfish) for bait. (Sport fish species listed on page 4. Minnows are defined as all fish, except sport fish species, less than 6 inches long. Bluegills are not sport fish and may be taken for bait as described above.

Here is a list of sport fish in KY.

Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Kentucky (spotted), Coosa Bass , Rock bass, Redear Sunfish, Walleye and hybrids, Sauger, Muskellunge, Chain Pickerel, Northern Pike, White, hybrid striped, yellow bass, Striped bass, Crappie (black and white), Rainbow trout, brown trout, and Brook trout

So in KY I would say it would be best not to use a sport fish other than a redear for bait. Rolling Eyes

If the reciprocating agreement is the same with KY and IN as it is with KY and OH it would be legal to use sport fish as bait in the Ohio. I am pretty sure the agreement is the same. You go by the laws for the state in which you hold a license. Here in Ohio we are only allowed to fish with two rods. When fishing in the Ohio with an Ohio licenses I am only allowed two rods. But with a KY license I can use unlimited rods. Thats one reason I buy a $50 non resident KY fishing license.

Just to clear things up.

KY and Ohio have reciprical aggreements to the Ohio river.
Indiana is the same.

Fishing in the river you can use Ohio or Ky license
Or Indiana or Ky license.

Most river fishermen opt for Ky license because you can use more rods.

Fishing from the bank you must have that states license and abide by their laws.

Aside from harvest limits most states allow the use of fish you catch for bait. If you are allowed to take it home and clean it why can't you use it for bait?

Many people assume this to be illegal without checking with Game officials.
I have contacted ODNR when adamant fishermen insist I cannot use bluegill as flathead bait.

Fish caught legally and within limits may be used as bait in Ohio.
Kentucky has never put a limit on catfish so I will bet fish caught legally may be used as bait.

I know that most folks catch skipjack with rod and reel and then use them for bait.[/b]
