got a question for all the catfish guys..................when do channel cats spawn ??
I fish the Tusc River and two weeks ago the channel cats were slamming everything that you threw at them and for the past 5-7 days ...........i cannot find a channel cat...........not even dinks !! i would think maybe im just having a fish dry spell but ive talked to NUMEROUS other guys who are all saying the same thing. I fished 4 out of the past 5 evenings and i cannot BUY a channel cat...........ive been using cut shad........live creek chubs..........cut creek chubs...........fresh shrimp and NOTHING. one bright side to all this though is.........THE FLATTIES are starting to bite pretty good. i know that fishing is fishing and that i cant catch fish everytime out but the channel cats have completely shut off. the ones we caught 2 weeks ago were BLOATED with eggs so i kinda think they are on spawn........... what do you all think ?? _________________ Brian & Renee Huff

The channels have been hitting good in the Tusc here lately. They are fat, but full of food, not necessarily eggs from the ones I have caught and have seen caught. Cut chub and live gill have been the best baits for the channels and the flatties _________________ Team Empty Stringer |

I would say there is a real good chance that the may be spawning in the waters that you are fishing. They were loading up with eggs about three weeks ago around here. So I would imagine it is about that time. _________________ If It Ain't Got Whiskers, It Must Be Bait. |

Brian
The channel cats in the lakes usually spawn June 15-20. About a week after the carp beat the banks up. We can really tell because just before that the male channel cats get super aggressive and start taking large live baits intended for flathead.
Flathead spawn about July 1 each year give or take a day or 2. _________________ Catchabiggun,

so do you think river fish start their spawn earlier or later then the lake fish do ?? _________________ Brian & Renee Huff

Catfish in each waterway will spawn when conditions are best.
Temperature in each waterway will varie and other conditiond may factor into the equation.
Cats are notorious for changing feeding or even just getting lockjaw.
Some catmen often blaim spawning behavior when it is just a matter of fish not being active.
Even when catfish are spawning they can be caught. The rate will be down due to fish actualyy spawnin but if feeding conditions occur the non breeding fish will eat. _________________ Catchabiggun,
