Headed out to try a new spot saturday night in the rain. With the steady rains the past week, this particular reservoir was up several feet. The spot we planned on setting up on was under water, but we were able to clear a small section and pull the boat almost into the woods. After the rest of the baits were dropped, I pitched the last one about 15 feet from the bank, just over the lip of what is normally the shoreline. At about 12:45 am, this bait got eaten and I hooked a very large fish. After several minutes of close range tug of war, the hook popped coming towards the net. Even at close range we never got a look at the fish in 2-3 minutes. Later around 4:30 am, another steady run woke us up. Dad set on a big fish, and eventually landed his new PB of 53.5 lbs., besting his previous by half a pound. This big female was loaded with eggs and was starting to show some signs of spawning behavior. She was released to provide us all with more fish for the next generation.
