Every spring before flathead season goes into full swing we hit the local lakes and small rivers for channels. Its some of the most fun and fast-paced fishing we do. One large lake near here always prouces well. When the spring rains flood the creeks flowing into the lake we know its time.
We normally take smaller spinning reels(I use an Abu Garcia Cardinal 106 on a 6' Cabelas Whuppin Stick M action) rig them up with 6" Thill slip floats and take either shad that we've froze over the winter or regular ol' nightcrawlers. After that its easy. We hit the flooded creek casting far upstream and drifting the baits down along with the current.
Some days we can hammer as many as 50 1-3lb. channels with some in the 5-7lb. range. We move to a different spot each time the fishing slows normally not spending any more than 30min. per spot.
Its fast, and its fun. Always a very enjoyable way to kick off the catfish season every year. Give it a try sometime.
