Mike Magis and I explored a theory at Salt Fork following the
huge drawdown for dam repairs. Any drawdowns of lakes are
normally temporary through winter time. This drawdown remained
till the dam was repaired.
We thought that the drawdown would concentrate flathead in
deeper waters since the traditional spots would be high and dry.
We caught a few flathead but unexpectantly caught lots of
channel cats that repeatedly attacked live bluegill.
While reflecting on the experience we tried to imagine what caused
this unexpected turn of events. My best guess is that the
drawdown exposed much of the shallow cover normally used by
bluegill. The channel cats reacted with their normal pattern. A
channel cats normal feeding is that the most abundant and
easiest food source is the best.
The channel cats took advantage of the drawdown to eat exposed
bluegill that had little available cover. Since they were already
sensitive to the vulnerability of the bream they naturally grabbed
baits pinned in open water.
Does anyone else have theories about our observances? _________________ Catchabiggun,
