Mike Magis agreed to go fishing with me to the James river near Richmond Va.
Since he had never fished for blue cats he was a little reluctant but I assured him it was a fun trip.
The first stop we made and 5 minutes later we both had blue cats.
After such a promising start we went the rest of the day without another cat
Mike seemed to have the hang of it early the next day.

I was lucky enough to get the camera out and get a video of him catching this 67 1/2 pound brute.
We caught more cats that day but they were all overshadowed by Mike's big cat.
We sat on a hole twice the next morning while getting bait. I caught a blue cat then.
We moved and Mike really went into action.
He quickly boated 4 braggin size blues and we had to move due to other river traffic
The little boat behind Mike needed through where we had been fishing
As it got dark I got a nice blue.
Mike and I both had a great time. I learned a little more about the James river cats and tides and set ups. We learned new rigging and how to get James river shad for bait.
We marvelled at the amount of waterfowl and watched eagles and deer when we weren't fighting big catfish. _________________ Catchabiggun,

Hey Robby...what kind of regulations are in place on the James River to protect those wonderful brutes? I was hoping to fly out there this year but it dosn't look good...next year for sure! _________________ Wet Nets! Cast, Cast, Cast, Cast, Cast, .......... |

Kevin
There are currently no regulations on the trophy cats in the James river.
A fish consumption advisory limits commercial fishing in the tidal James river.
This same advisory helps
sportsman convince meat hunters the value of catch and release
But the diversity of habitat and limitless amounts of food sources
almost guarantee the trophy fishery will survive and prosper.
I smile when I think that none of the blue cats are over 17 years old
That means that the James river cats are not yet full sized! _________________ Catchabiggun,
